Resolving to write more blog posts next year.

This blog about my school studies is one blog I resolve to write more posts for next year, 2018.

I will be attending the Association of Internet Researcher's annual conference this year.

I have my hotel room reserved and my flight booked and paid for now. I have holidays booked off work. My work does not focus solely on Internet Research so I can not get my workplace to pay for this trip.

Nobel prize lectures

I last attended a Nobel prize lecture in Toronto at the Ontario Science centre Polanyi in 1986 or 87. He touched on gun control.

This blog is not used much anymore

I have not blogged much since after my first year or two of working in government. Partly this is because I must work at a certain level of secrecy to protect citizen data and citizen personal information. I am working mostly programming in the SAS statistical programming and data management computer language.

Well I tried getting back into sociological reading.

I read a little theory of rules and laws of sociology. I have not been doing as much academic study since leaving school. I do participate in conferences and write computer programming related papers. I want to try reading some heavy sociology this weekend.

I bought both Coders at Work and Data Scientists at Work

My presentation on suicide intervention in peer support communities is completed.

I was able to write a Power Point slide show with very little content and appropriate number of bullet points per slide. I recorded the talking for the presentation ahead of time. It went well. I added a lot of people to my main Twitter account by presenting at this suicide prevention conference.

Conferences, grad school and why life and 2 BAs make me an expert on just about anything.

I was so proud while studying in my first thesis attempt to be already presenting conference papers and able to write papers about my thesis from both a socio-economic perspective and a knowledge representational logic model perspective. 

I still present in a variety of fields, this year presenting on privacy law and the Internet , peer community suicide intervention capacity. And writing conference papers for next year on technical formatting of Excel, automating software reuse, and managing knowledge in the context of SAS programming talent.

And I have a day job in an office paying a salary supporting all this creative academic expression.

Slowly catching up on my blogs.

I have been so caught up on facebook these past 7 years I have basically stopped blogging. I need to start again.

Reading "Coders at Work"

I read the first interview in two sittings in the book

Seibel, Peter. Coders at work: Reflections on the craft of programming. (New York: N.Y., Apress, 2009).

The first interview is with XEmacs and Netscape 1.0 mail reader programmer Jamie Zawinski. By reading in two sittings I could process his energy better and came to learn more from the interview on the second part of the reading.

Social Media and Society 2014 #SMSociety14 is a conference I am giving a poster at on privacy, and the Internet.

I managed to find the Social Media and Society conference that is taking place at the end of September in Toronto which is not far from me here in Ottawa. I also managed to find a coauthor and write up an abstract that will now be a poster at this conference. I am writing about the individual, privacy and the Internet and will present some theory about the individual and privacy along with one of the latest Supreme Court of Canada cases concerning search warrants and online privacy. The court has been very clear and made a solid statement about the expectations we can have about online privacy as long as we are not committing seriously harmful crimes.

Picking up blogging again.

I have been working at job daily for the past 8 years that requires confidentiality. So unlike being in school and being able to talk openly about my work and learning, I am these days a little more restricted. I will though try to take up blogging again.

Reading Gina Neff's Venture Labor.

I heard Gina Neff speak at Internet Research 14 ( #IR14 )in Denver and bought her book Venture Labor.

Working with SAS programming

I have moved out of school for now. I have made many work place associates. I work hard at work like I did in school. I tend to code long 100 line or more programs in the SAS computer language for work. I learned this language at school in my statistics degree. I have come to know many SAS Press authors in the last two years. I have met these authors at the annual user conference. I was tempted to write a book myself for SAS Press and started this project last year.

Studying more about data gathering and taking a part time job in coding text drawn down from the net.

I have been reading a bit about qualitative interviewing which may come before focus groups. I have read a few other books on data gathering from human subjects in the past few years. I have not read a great deal about this yet.

I started training tonight for some work in text analytics. I am being possibly employed to code or classify text coming from popular Internet sites. I am not sure this job will work out.

Technology moves forward.

Technological evolution is based on good solutions. A new technology offers a better solution. Business improvement, statistical process improvement all of these move us to a new technology that does the job better. So we use the better technology. This is the counter argument to the idea that technology is capricious or a fad object or a fetish symbol. I learned this reading

Jacques Ellul The Technological Society, (New York: Vintage 1967).

This book also describes how technology will run over traditional societies and religions.

Blogging my studies in a coursera course on learning.

I just watched the first film in a new course I started today. The course is on e-learning and digital culture. The hash tag for the course is #edcmooc. The film showed the TV arriving from the sky to a primitive tribe. This in the course represents a technology. Thus I feel we are situated in the living room. Then another new technology to comes along that looks like a computer and it blue screens and dies and the film is over. My thoughts? Some people really enjoy TV. Some people really enjoy computers. There is a lot more technology behind these living room technologies. I am not sure now if living rooms are driving our technological progress or if living room technology is a side product of technologies uses in other parts of society. A TV is not just a box of electronics. There is at least a TV camera somewhere else.
